A transplant of my now dying blog on blogger, but nothing personal, just course related. |
So, what else am I going to do over Fall Break, other than homework? So here’s a post, now that I have found some inspiration.
In last week’s reading we discussed how emoticons aren’t “pointless banter.” Well, although I won’t dispute or deny that emoticons have their uses, after watching Pamela Meyer’s TEDTalk, I’m convinced that emoticons aren’t enough to take the place of human to human communication.
In her TEDTalk she talked about spotting liars and looking for the truth. It’s easier to lie via Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Tumblr…etc. Also, there are more and more people living public lives online, and so lies are only going to be more prevalent. And despite the usefulness of emoticons, they simply do not convey the necessary body language needed for clear communication. I think since emoticons do not fulfill their purpose fully, it is okay to label them as “pointless banter.”
Click here to watch the talk; it’s worth your while. You too can learn how to spot a lie.
